Designing A Coastal Living Room That Works For Real Life

When designing a home along the water, it’s important to create spaces that feel both beautiful and livable. This particular living room needed to function for a busy household that includes two lovable bulldogs, frequent entertaining, and plenty of everyday family time.

Our design process began with durability. Because the room sees heavy daily use, we wanted to ensure the upholstery would hold up to pets and real life. Before any furniture was ordered, the homeowners were given a selection of fabric samples with different performance finishes and asked to test them with their dogs. This allowed us to see how each fabric responded to scratching, lounging, and wear—helping us choose materials that would maintain their beauty over time.

With the practical foundation established, the design story began with two pieces of artwork the homeowners already loved: an octopus and a jellyfish. Their fluid movement and ocean-inspired colors inspired the room’s palette of soft turquoise, creamy neutrals, and warm khaki tones, creating a calming coastal atmosphere without feeling overly themed. We also reworked the furniture layout to better support the way the family lives and entertains. A group of four swivel chairs creates a flexible seating arrangement ideal for family game nights and conversation. Because the chairs rotate, they can easily turn toward the adjoining living area during gatherings, allowing the space to flow naturally for larger groups.Material choices throughout the room balance texture with durability. Chairs combining leather seats with outdoor-grade upholstery add visual interest while offering exceptional longevity. Ottomans on castors provide flexible seating that can be moved into the space when needed, making the room adaptable without sacrificing comfort.

Rather than replacing everything, we also incorporated pieces the homeowners already owned. Their existing buffet and decorative chest were thoughtfully layered into the design, enhanced with a new mirror and accessories that allow these meaningful pieces to stand out. Finally, a sculptural tree-branch coffee table introduces warmth and an organic coastal element, anchoring the seating area while reinforcing the relaxed character of the home. This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful planning, durable materials, and personal details can come together to create a space that is both beautiful and truly livable. At Dwelling Place Interiors, we believe great design tells the story of the people who live there—and this living room does exactly that.
