How to Design a Home that Loves Your Family Well
Did you know that your home’s design can (and should!) support the way you connect with your favorite people? It couldn’t be more true. The way we design our spaces can directly impact the quality of time we spend together, encouraging meaningful connections and creating a home that nurtures family bonds.
For our family, attending milestone moments like our daughter’s first musical and our son’s cross-country state meet are unforgettable highlights. But it’s the everyday moments, like the conversations we share around the dinner table, that truly shape our greatest memories. Even in the hustle and bustle of life, our home has always been the heart of these connections.
Today, I’m sharing how thoughtful design can support the way you love your family, help you create space for togetherness, and foster those meaningful moments.
Think about the activities your family enjoys together and design spaces to encourage those connections. Whether it’s a cozy spot for one-on-one time with your spouse, a quiet corner for ongoing puzzles (we’re currently loving this one), a room for game nights, or an outdoor area for recreation, the key is to create spaces that draw your family in.
Nothing strengthens family bonds like shared activities. At our house, puzzles are a favorite. We leave them out on a table during the holidays, and it’s always fun to see the kids gather spontaneously to work together. Another favorite is karaoke. We’ve had our karaoke machine for years, and it’s a lighthearted way to bond and laugh — no talent required!
Technology is a great tool, but it can also hinder family connection. I recommend setting up a charging station away from the dinner table to keep devices out of sight during meals. Even better, consider implementing a no-phone rule during certain times of the day — like during dinner or family game night.
Personally, I have both a work phone and a personal phone, which allows me to fully unplug at the end of the day. I know not everyone can do that, but I’ve found that it has made a huge difference. When I have the freedom to unplug, I am recharged and fully present with my family on the weekends, and return to work refreshed and creative on Monday morning.
Does everyone have a seat at the table? Does everyone have a place to sit in the family room? It might seem like a small thing, but making sure everyone has a designated spot truly promotes a sense of togetherness and belonging.
We absolutely love our family dinners, where conversations often continue long after the meal is over. We talk about everything — highs, lows, current events, and deep discussions. When our kids were younger, we used a wooden figure called Mr. Speaker. Whoever held it got to speak, teaching them to take turns and listen. If you’re struggling to start meaningful conversations, try using these conversation cards to break the ice.
Children often share the most with their parents at night before bed. It’s the perfect time to reflect on the day together, reinforce your love for them, and help them soothe their minds before sleep. Where will you snuggle up with your child for a bedtime story, or sit with your teen for a heartfelt conversation? For young children, a bed or a cozy upholstered rocking chair would be perfect. A bedroom sofa may be more appropriate for teens.
Grand gestures aren’t always necessary! Sometimes a small detail or simple change in the routine can elevate the day. We have a set of red heart-shaped plates that I sometimes use for dinner to encourage someone who had a difficult day, or just to celebrate that we love each other. Or, consider a candlelight dinner. The food can be take-out, but adding a little ambiance ups the specialness factor.
In the busyness of life, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what really matters — the people we love. Home should be a haven: a place of welcome, safety, fun, and connection. At the end of our lives, we won’t be concerned with the house we built, but with the people we shared it with and the memories we made together.
At Dwelling Place Interiors, our heart’s passion is creating spaces that allow you to love others well. If you’re ready to begin the journey towards creating a home designed for connection, reach out to us here. We can’t wait to hear from you.
