Do you love opening your home to friends and family? I certainly do. There’s something special about crisp October evenings, the smell of something delicious in the oven, and the sound of loved ones gathered around the table. Yet sometimes, we notice our homes aren’t quite keeping up with the moments we want to create.

Maybe your dining room feels a little tight for hosting, your entryway doesn’t quite say “welcome,” or your living room could use those cozy, layered touches that make people want to linger. At Dwelling Place Interiors, we always begin with a thoughtful space plan. Understanding how you live and entertain guides every decision we make, long before selecting the first color or pattern. A thoughtful layout should make connection effortless.

When we help our clients prepare their homes for hosting, we focus on:

The Flow of the Space: Can guests move naturally from the kitchen to the table to the living room?

The Comfort Factor: Is there enough seating, the right lighting, and a mix of textures that feel inviting?

The Storytelling Layers: Which pieces reflect your life—heirlooms, travel treasures, or even a favorite color palette that sets the tone?

Gatherings aren’t about perfection—they’re about connection. The right design makes those moments easier, more comfortable, and more memorable. If you’re ready to create a home that welcomes in both people and memories, we’d love to help you bring your Homestory to life.

When it comes to fall gatherings, beauty isn’t only about what we see. The most memorable moments happen when all the senses are engaged. In fact, our sense of smell is the strongest trigger of memory. That’s why the aroma of a cinnamon candle or a pot of mulled cider can instantly transport us back to childhood holidays or cozy evenings with family.By decorating for the senses this fall and every other season, you’re creating lasting memories for the people you welcome in. Consider these design suggestions:
Scent: A simmer pot with cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel, or a woodsy candle greets guests with a seasonal scent at the door. You could also consider choosing a family scent for each season. Grab a few essential oils and let everyone choose their favorite. You might even pick a favorite scent and allow that to be the only scent during their birthday month.
Touch: A cozy throw draped over a chair, a textured table runner, or even the warmth of a mug between your hands enhances the way you experience your home. In my family, we also have a special way to show we love each other. When we are holding hands with each other, for the kids that’s often during prayer at meals, three quick squeezes means “I love you.” It’s been a fun way to remind each other that we love one another.
Taste: Incorporate seasonal flavors—apple cider, pumpkin bread, roasted vegetables—that linger long after the evening ends.

Step inside our Whitesides project, a mid-century home situated on the picturesque intracoastal waterway. Our clients wanted to maintain the charm of this home, but knew it needed an update. We lightened and brightened the interior and exterior, while selecting warm patterns and colors inspired by the home’s original era. The result is a comfortable, inviting home full of character.

When fall arrives, our wardrobes aren’t the only things that need layers. Take a look at your sofa or chairs. Do they feel a little bare? Adding one textured throw and a couple of patterned pillows is often enough to make a room feel more inviting. Think of it as giving your space a “sweater weather” refresh—simple, cozy, and stylish. Here are a few favorites I love this time of year.1. Dough Bowl Candle: This rustic candle will add the perfect cozy charm to your fall coffee table. Not only does it look beautiful, but it will fill your home with the comforting scent of vanilla latte.2. Faux Fur Throw: This ultra soft blanket pulls double duty on your sofa this fall. It will make your space seem more visually inviting, and it’s also perfect for cozy family movie night snuggles. 3. Velvet Pillow Covers: Swap your light summer pillow covers for these soft, textured covers. They come in a variety of fall colors and will add interest and comfort to your living room.4. Gold Candle Holders: Create a warm and pleasant ambiance in your space with these elegant candle holders. The varying heights allow you to create your own unique arrangement.
